Lesson 8: Meet Our Lady

This page is for SMA Family Faith Formation Catechists only. Content for this lesson is linked below.

Summary of Lesson

The month of May is traditionally dedicated to Mary, Mother of God, or “Our Lady”. In this last lesson of the year, we will go over a few key aspects of this part of our faith. Mary was Jesus’ mother, she was sinless, she helped care for the apostles. Mary is also our mother in heaven. Just like our earthly mothers and grandmothers, she takes care of us, she loves us and wants to help us. Mary’s “Magnificat” is the pray she prayed when she visited her cousin Elizabeth. The Hail Mary is a prayer based on words from the Bible, in the Rosary, we repeat the Hail Mary and Our Father while remembering key moments in Jesus’ life.

Meet Our Lady Bullet Points:

  • Mary is Jesus’ mother. She is human, like us, she is not God, but she is the mother of Jesus who is God.
  • Mary did not have any sin – God made it possible for her to not have any sin! This makes her a great example of holiness!
  • Mary loves us just like she loves Jesus, because God made her the mother of the whole Church.
  • Mary is always ready to help us from Heaven!
  • Prayers like the Magnificat, the Hail Mary, and the Rosary help us to reach out to Mary and Jesus.

Scripture Passage: Luke 1:46-55L Mary’s Song of Praise

And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;  for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”

Discussion Prompts/Questions:

  1. What are some things you love about your own mother or grandmother?
  2. What are some situations when you need your mother’s help?
  3. What do you think it was like to be Jesus’ mother?
  4. Why should we reach out to Mary for help?
  5. What can Mary teach us about loving and following Jesus?

Saint of the Month: St. Damien of Molokai (May 10th)

The Saint of the month is St. Damien of Molokai. He was born in a country called Belgium. He was the youngest of seven children and his family were farmers. Instead of being a farmer, though, he became a priest. He volunteered to go the island of Molokai, in Hawaii, where there were people suffering from leprosy, a deadly skin disease. He spent the rest of his life serving them – helping them spiritually and physically. He prayed for the people before Jesus in the Eucharist and through the rosary. He eventually got leprosy too and died on the island. He was canonized a Saint by Pope Benedict XVI.
