Family Faith Formation Lesson Six: March 9th, 2025
Following Sunday’s Gospel: Luke 9:28-36 The Transfiguration
This year our focus for FFF lessons is to help the children learn about and “see” Jesus in the New Testament. Saint of the month will also be listed, but this is optional.
| Date | Scripture | Summary | Saint |
| March 9th | Luke 9:28-36 | “The Transfiguration” | Saint Joseph |
Gospel Passage:
He took along Peter, John, and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming. And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah, who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who were standing with Him. And as these two men were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here; and let’s make three tents: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not realizing what he was saying. But while he was saying this, a cloud formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. And then a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!” And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.
Gospel Summary:
This Gospel passage is about one of Jesus’ most mysterious miracles: He appears to be glowing and speaking to two people who have died – Moses and Elijah… and then we hear the voice of God coming from the clouds! What does this tell us? And why do we read this Gospel during Lent? This is so different from Jesus’ other miracles. The two people from the Old Testament tell us that Jesus came to fulfill all the longings and prayers of the people of the Old Testament. They had been crying out for a Messiah for so long, and Jesus was now there. Jesus is God Himself, come to earth and Jesus’ “shiny-ness” shows us how we will all be when we get to Heaven. We will be healed and whole and new again. We will reflect the love and glory of God. This heavenly meeting is also meant to tell us that death doesn’t have the final word – that even though Jesus will suffer and die, he will rise again. During Lent, we reflect on our sins and sacrifice and fast, as a way of turning our hearts and our focus towards God… and we look forward to that day when we will be with Jesus and all the Saints in Heaven. We can get there if we listen to God the Father’s words: “Listen to Him”.
Lesson Bullet Points:
- The “Transfiguration” is a miracle of Jesus
- He appears like we will look in Heaven… glorified!
- Even now, we are called to reflect God’s love and glory (like mirrors).
- Jesus is the answer to our prayers for hope and healing.
- This is a “preview” of Jesus’ defeating death in the Resurrection.
- In Lent we fast and pray in order to draw closer to God, but we do it with hope.
- God the Father tells us to “listen” to his Son Jesus.
Discussion Prompts/Questions:
- What do you think Heaven will be like?
- Who would you like to talk to, who has already died?
- Can you think of a moment where God answered your prayers?
- What are some ways to follow God’s voice and “listen” to Jesus?
- How are you going to pray and sacrifice this Lent?
Saint of the Month: Saint Joseph (March 19th)
Saint Joseph is one of the greatest examples we have of “listening” to God. God asked him to take care of Mary and Jesus, the Son of God, and St. Joseph did this! An angel appeared to him to tell him not to be afraid, to take care of Mary, and then later, to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt. We see Joseph responding immediately. We celebrate St. Joseph throughout the year, but especially here in New Orleans on March 19th. We can ask St. Joseph to help us listen to God and to follow his words.
