Lesson 4 2024: Jesus the Way, the Truth, the Life

This page is for SMA Family Faith Formation Catechists only. Content for this lesson is linked below.

Summary of Lesson

As a connection to the great Feast of Christmas we recently celebrated, and the upcoming seasons of Lent and Easter, we are going to continue focusing on Jesus in this lesson, specifically Jesus as the Way, the Truth and the Life. Jesus is very real and we can turn to him at every moment of our life. In a few words – Jesus is our map, our key, the strength of our life and our greatest answer! Any of these themes can be developed.

Lesson Bullet Points:

  • Jesus shows us the Way through life.
  • Jesus tells us the truth about who we are.
  • Jesus gives us life and nourishes us like the sun.

Scripture Passage: John 3:16

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life.”

Discussion Prompts/Questions:

  1. What are some things that help us to find our way to a new destination? Or to find our way home when we are lost? Have you ever been lost?
  2. What can get us “off-course” in our Spiritual Life?
  3. Why do we need Jesus to help us know what is true? About life and about ourselves?
  4. What are some examples of things that help nourish our life and our bodies? How is Jesus like these things?
  5. What are some other words that we can use to describe Jesus?

Saint of the Month: St. Bakhita (Feast Day:  February 8th)

St. Bakhita was mistreated by many people when she was young. She also didn’t know Jesus – her family wasn’t Christian. But right when she heard about Jesus, she knew that he was God and that he loved her. And she chose to give her life to him and to forgive all those that had hurt her.

Catechist Resources

  • Lesson 6 Parent Essay: “Jesus the Way, the Truth and the Life”

Songs & Videos

Crafts & Activities

  • Print out the traffic signs (HERE) and show them one at a time. Ask the kids what each sign means. Show the “One way” sign at the end and talk about how Jesus shows us the way to Heaven. Talk about what happens when we do not follow the signs.
  • Walking “the way”: place a long piece (10’) of duct tape in a line on the floor. Tell the children that Jesus said that “the way” is sometimes narrow. It is not always easy, but following Jesus brings us joy and peace and leads us to Heaven. Have the kids walk across the duct tape line like a balance beam.
  • Way Truth Life Coloring Page (here)
  • Way Truth and Life Road Sign Craft (in the packet)
  • Draw and/or fill in your own “map of Life” with Heaven at the end. Put different “roadblocks” or detours along the way (blank map in the packet).
  • Make a small obstacle course in the classroom. If possible, blindfold one child and have another child guide them through the course. Talk about how Jesus is our way through life.
  • Talk about what we sometimes say or think about ourselves and what God says to us (see printable below or make your own)
